Exclusive Interview with Halloween Happy
What’s the story behind the name Halloween Happy?
Halloween has always been my safe space, my little corner of joy no matter what was going on in life. Growing up, October was always extra special in my house. My mom poured so much love into the season, from decorating to making costumes, and it really shaped how I see Halloween. The name “Halloween Happy” felt like the most natural way to capture that feeling I carry with me year-round.
What inspired you to move to Salem?
After losing my mom, my whole world was shaken up. It made me realize how short and fragile life really is, and I figured I might as well see what’s out there. My partner and I had visited Salem a few times and every trip felt magical, like the city was calling to me. Eventually, I decided to see what it would be like living here. Moving gave me the chance to start fresh in a place that celebrates the season I love most.
Do you have any tips for ghouls who want to move to Salem?
Visiting Salem and actually living here can feel like two different experiences. My biggest tip is to visit a few times in different seasons. Also, spend some time looking at Reddit threads or online forums where people share what it’s like to live here. You’ll find stories from folks who moved here and love it, and others who left and explain why. Hearing those different perspectives can give you a better idea of what day-to-day life in Salem is really like before you make the leap.
And if your heart keeps pulling you here, trust that feeling. Moving anywhere new can be scary, but if Salem feels like home in your soul, it’s worth exploring. And honestly, it doesn’t have to be Salem. If you’ve been dreaming of any place that feels more aligned with who you are, it’s worth giving yourself the chance to see what life could be like there.
Why do you love Salem so much?
There are so many reasons I love Salem. It’s such a special mix of being right by the ocean, tucked into New England charm, and full of history and magic. I love that it’s a pet-friendly city where I can enjoy adventures with my pup, Abra. The downtown area is always buzzing with energy, and the community here is so warm and welcoming. Salem has this way of feeling both exciting and comforting at the same time.
Describe the perfect day in Salem to us!
Ahh! This is hard. To name just a few things to do! The perfect day in Salem would start with coffee at Wolf Next Door, then a walk by the ocean to soak in the view. I’d make a stop at the House of Seven Gables, browse the shops at the wharf, and maybe even make my own broom at The Witchery. For food, I’d grab a bite at Mercy, then wander over to the Halloween Museum and the Ouija Museum. A must for me is popping into Count Orlok’s and Silver Moon Comics, and of course browsing at Die With Your Boots On.
I’d stroll through the Common, snap a photo at the Witch House, and stop to smell the candles at Witch City Wicks. Black Veil is always worth a visit, and I’d finish with a quiet moment in the garden behind the Ropes Mansion. The exterior of this historic home was famously used as Allison’s house in Hocus Pocus. Grab yourself a sweet treat from Dairy Witch!
And honestly, that’s just scratching the surface!
I feel like you are mostly known for Halloween but I have a feeling you love horror a bit too, if not just as much! Can you tell me a little bit about your journey with horror and some of your favorites?
I love horror!! My partner and I watch horror movies all the time, and going to horror cons has become one of our favorite things to do together. I grew up watching scary movies, so it’s always been a big part of my life. I get super fixated on them. To give you a glimpse into my taste, I’ll never get tired of classics like Halloween and Creature from the Black Lagoon, Alice Sweet Alice, but I also love modern films like Nope, and Smile 2. 90s horror especially has my heart. It’s such a nostalgic era for me.
Your Etsy shop is SO cute! How did you get into crafting and what inspired you to start your shop?
Thank you! I have so much I want to do. When I started Halloween Happy, I imagined it as a way to create both a community and products that could bring a little spooky happiness to souls like mine…to brighten their day and make them feel at home. I’ve always loved crafting and, back in the day, I would use whatever I had on hand to make Halloween-y things because creepy cute items weren’t as easy to find as they are now. My shop is really just an extension of that. I love helping ghouls sprinkle Halloween into their everyday life.
How do you decide which themes to create for your planners and bookmarks?
I usually create based on what I personally love or what I know will make someone smile and feel good. A lot of it comes from the things that inspire me in my everyday spooky life whether it’s a cozy Halloween vibe, a fun seasonal moment, or just something that feels like it would brighten someone’s day.
